"interestingly tuned free folk" Boa Melody Bar
- Hezzu, Palasokeri
"Gloriously deranged forest folk dirge from yet another excellent Finnish group. A thoroughly intriguing and mysterious musical fable of old twisted oaks, dead leaves and wild animals that can swallow you whole." Sea of Shining Shoryobuni
"It's been a busy year for Finland's Vapaa, but one that hasn't gone without success. People are really starting to pay attention to these forest folk masters, and on this latest disc from Helsinki's excellent 267 Lattajjaa imprint, they have reached a new level of sound. "Vuoma" takes many of the elements of forest clatter apparent on their previous efforts, and hones it into a finely chiseled, loosely piece together wall. This lofi affair is not so much about the individual tracks, but moreso about the entire listening experience. Detuned guitars and random scrapings are apparent throughout "Vuoma," and the environment these recordings were made in is constantly in the back of your mind. It's like being in the woods while the sky is grey and rain is showing down upon you. And despite being soaked to the bone, you feel refreshed and alive. It's like you are part of the earth; you are a terrestial being in every since. Vapaa are the children of the Earth,
coming out in celebration of all things are beautiful and natural. Their cathartic releases are borne of dirt and trees, and on "Vuoma" they are rejoicing loudly." 8/10 - Brad Rose, FoxyDigitalis
"These guys have serious breadth in their music. From free jazz to fractured acoustic folk.I mean, I guess that really, it's not that far, as it's kind of a similar mindset, just different instruments, but whatever. This sounds really good, and certainly fits the description they've been getting: "forest folk." It sounds like the ungainly playing of a guitar that an enormous old oak would record. That sounds really stupid doesn't it? 8/10" Dick Baldwin, Landing
"I haven't heard the first Vapaa cdr (also on 267L), but it's been described as "free ambient" (whatever that means). After that they got a few tracks on some compilation and they were ok freejazz. This 30-minute disc is again something different: very lo-fi experimental folk that so many (=too many) people make nowadays. There are some good ideas here and there, but there's nothing catchy or memorable and the sound quality is totally shitty. It says on the covers that the disc has been recorded in the woods, but that (if it's true in the first place...) is no excuse for the lame sound quality. Blah. The tracks are named after different plants, flowers, etc, but I doubt that the city-hippies behind this (and those who buy this) have ever seen any of them." Pekka PT, Dilettante's Digest
